The panel refused development application D/2025/961 for 134 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. The application was for digital LED lighting of the sign on top of the Oxford Hotel.
The chair said the panel agreed with the reasons for refusal in the council officers' report. The panel also found that, on a merits assessment alone, the development did not warrant approval.
The chair said the LED lighting would change the nature and character of the sign, and that this would affect the heritage conservation area. The size of the sign would stay about the same.
The applicant relied on existing use rights from a 1992 development application, the chair said. The application was advertised and no submissions were received. Nobody spoke for the applicant at the meeting.
The three panel members present agreed with the refusal. The community representative was not at the formal meeting.
